Fargo and Moorhead Mayors visit Washington; meet with Trump Administration

Federal Officials Remain Committed to the FM Diversion

Leaders from the FM Area Diversion Board of Authority traveled to Washington D.C. to discuss the project with federal representatives and elected officials.

“It was important to travel to Washington and meet with the new personnel in the Trump Administration about the FM Diversion Project,” FM Diversion Board of Authority Chair, and Mayor of Fargo Tim Mahoney said. “We had successful high-level meetings with U.S. Senator John Hoeven, U.S. Senator Heidi Heitkamp and Congressman Kevin Cramer.”

“Moorhead Mayor Del Rae Williams and I also met with staff members within several agencies, including the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Transportation, Assistant Secretary of the Army’s Office and the U.S. Department of Interior,” he said. “I am especially grateful to Senator Hoeven for securing a meeting with OMB Director Mick Mulvaney, which was both productive and impactful.”

“We were also honored to meet with Lieutenant General Todd Semonite, who unequivocally restated his strong support for this project and his commitment to our shared goal of working to mitigate the impacts on those affected by the FM Area Diversion Project,” Mahoney said. “Throughout all of our meetings, federal officials were impressed with the demonstrated local support of the project, most notably the overwhelming passage of the recent sales tax extension measure.”

“We continually highlighted the private-public partnerships and unique funding models that differentiate this project from countless others across the nation. The FM Area Diversion Project aligns with President Trump’s commitment to substantially invest in public infrastructure and create American jobs,” he said. “It will save the federal government hundreds of millions of dollars through its innovative delivery model and the prevention of future flooding emergencies, all while generating a strong return on investment. We look forward to continued federal appropriations as we begin construction of this vital project.”

Moorhead Mayor Del Rae Williams remarked, “I appreciate the opportunity to speak about how the FM Diversion Project benefits Moorhead. It is a fabulous opportunity to be able to talk directly to the key decision makers. I appreciate Senator Hoeven’s ability to guide the discussion and move us forward.”
